the 1980s memphis style features colorful and abstract decoration as parallel shapes, sometimes arbitrarily alluding to such movements as art deco and pop art, and styles such as the 1950s kitsch and futuristic themes. the name of the style was was taken from the bob dylan song 'stuck inside of mobile with the memphis blues again' which had been played on loop throughout the memphis group's first collaborative meeting in 1981.
